Police to Pole

Over the past 16 years, I’ve faced and conquered the rigorous demands of working in law enforcement. My journey as a police officer has tested me physically and mentally, with challenges such as scaling 6-foot walls, navigating obstacle courses, enduring OC spray, and experiencing the effects of a 50,000-volt TASER. This career requires striking a delicate balance between being a guardian and a warrior—demonstrating assertiveness and resilience while also embodying compassion and empathy. As a naturally assertive “alpha female” and self-proclaimed “pit bull in a skirt,” embracing my softer side has always been a challenge. But in the summer of 2024, I felt drawn to explore a hobby that would help me reconnect with my femininity and break away from the monotony of traditional gym workouts. That search led me to pole dance—a world completely removed from the structure and discipline of law enforcement. The idea of trading my gun belt and boots for knee pads and six-inch heels was captivating.

In my current role, I’m required to maintain a strong command presence—taking control of critical incidents, empowering my subordinates, and preparing them to become the future leaders of law enforcement.  But stepping into the world of pole dance has taught me the value of relinquishing control and becoming a student of this unique and empowering art. Crossing the threshold from the structured environment of law enforcement into the freedom of the pole studio is nothing short of liberating for both my mind and body.

When I first started pole, I vividly recall the advice from Lilli, one of my instructors, who told me, “Stop trying to control the pole.” Her words resonated deeply because, as a police officer, my entire professional life revolves around control—controlling the scene while directing and controlling the actions of others. Control is second nature to me. Yet, this foreign concept of not controlling has become a key to unlocking my potential in pole dance. By letting go, I’ve discovered how to flow with the art rather than against it, allowing myself to fully immerse in the experience. This shift has not only helped me progress in pole but has also offered a profound sense of balance.

It’s truly empowering to embrace all facets of who I am becoming, finding harmony between the grit of a police officer and the grace of a pole-dancing. The ability to transform from a “pit bull in a skirt” into a free-flowing goddess of creativity has been nothing short of euphoric. However, I must admit, the art and grace of pole dance is incredibly challenging, and it is this very difficulty that humbles me.  It’s a reminder that growth and evolution come from stepping outside of our comfort zones, and I’m savoring every moment of this newfound balance and joy.

Salis and her exceptionally talented team of instructors have cultivated a safe and welcoming space where women of all body types, professions, and ages can explore and embrace their inner goddess. Connecting with a community of women outside of law enforcement who share a mutual passion has been the unexpected therapy I didn’t know I needed. Observing the beauty of bodies in motion, witnessing the strength of these incredible women as they invert on the pole, and observing the raw power of self-expression in every movement is nothing short of exhilarating. The studio has become my sanctuary, a space where I can step out of the rigid confines of my professional life and embrace a freer, more creative side of myself I thought was nonexistence.  This journey is more than learning to pole dance—it’s about redefining how I approach life, blending strength with vulnerability, control with surrender, and discipline with creativity.
